Website Standards:
WC3 or the World Wide Web Consortium is the industry body who develops industry standards and best practices for building websites. For example: HTML (the Hypertext Markup Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) are two of the core technologies for building Web pages. HTML provides the structure of the page, CSS the (visual and aural) layout, for a variety of devices. Website Sitemaps:
Sitemaps.org is the industry body who develops best practices for website search engine content indexing. Google, Yahoo and Bing now all support the use of XML sitemaps. Sitemaps are an easy way for webmasters to inform search engines about pages on their sites that are available for crawling. In its simplest form, a Sitemap is an XML file that lists URLs for a site along with additional metadata about each URL (when it was last updated, how often it usually changes, and how important it is, relative to other URLs in the site) so that search engines can more intelligently crawl the site. Web crawlers usually discover pages from links within the site and from other sites. Sitemaps supplement this data to allow crawlers that support Sitemaps to pick up all URLs in the Sitemap and learn about those URLs using the associated metadata. Google Analytics:
Google Analytics is a tracking code and unique account identifier that is provided by Google and placed on web pages by a web designer to record information about visiting traffic and the searches undertaken to find a website, including paid Google Adwords advertising v's organic (free) search engine listings. All successful websites use Google Analytics and Google reports on traffic sources and keyword searches, to substantiate site traffic and direct online marketing activity. Google Adwords:
Google Adwords is an online advertising system provided by Google that displays paid listings on a Google page in the sponsored area (right hand side column + very top). If you have a small site that is not listing well on Google, Adwords advertising can get you listed on page 1 when you pay the market price. If your advertisement is displayed this is called an Impression, and when a visitor clicks on your advertisement, this is called a click-through (to your site) and you are billed by Google. The market price varies between industries and pages 1-2-3 etc., some clicks range between $5-20 per click-through for page 1, however you can start from as little as $100 per month and generate online enquiry with no lock-in contract that can be switched on or off as often as you like. Email Marketing:
Email marketing is a new way to reach customers and subscribers with information on a regular basis. There are many different ways to email market and you must ensure the Spam Act is followed to prevent breaking any laws. HTML email marketing is a popular way to email newsletters and specials, which is sending a web page like this one to a database of subscribers. To do this you need a HTML newsletter template, a content management system (CMS) for changing content, an email marketing system (3rd party subscription system) for distributing the web page and an email list of subscribers. A good way to obain subscribers is to put a form on your website that is completed in exchange for some information or invite people via email to join your mailing list.
